Kahil El’Zabar, eräs Chicagon syvän musiikkiperinteen keskeisimmistä suunnannäyttäjistä tuo legendaarisen Ethnic Hertitage Ensemblen Suomeen ja Väreille. Vuonna 1974 perustettu Ethnic Heritage Ensemble syntyi El’Zabarin inspiraatiosta tutkia jazzin ja perinteisten afrikkalaisten musiikkityylien syvää yhteyttä instrumentaation ja rytmiikan kautta. Yhtye levytti aikanaan myös kotimaiselle Leo Recordsille (Welcome, 1984), joten kokoonpanon esiintymisessä on myös historiallista syvyyttä. Ethnic Heritage Ensemble esiintyy kokoonpanossa Kahil El’Zabar (rummut), Corey Wilkes (trumpetti), Kevin Nabors (saksofoni) ja Ishmael Ali (sello).
Kahil El’Zabar has been one of the deepest and most forward-thinking artists from Chicago’s renowned improvised music scene for many years. Working in many creative contexts as a member of the boundlessly innovative AACM, El’Zabar founded the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble in 1974, as a way to further explore the connections between African-American music, like jazz, with more traditional African instrumentation and rhythms. The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble includes trumpeter, Corey Wilkes, tenor saxophonist Kevin Nabors, cellist Ishmael Ali and the compelling presence of Kahil El’Zabar on drum set, hand percussion, Kalimba, and soulful vocalizations. The Ensemble celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a much acclaimed album Open Me and a world tour, and in 2025 followed up with the new album Let the Spirit Out (Spiritmuse Records).
